Our 2021 in Review

It's the time of year for us to do a retrospective on how far our organization has come and what we've achieved in 365 days.

Our 2021 can only be summarized in one word: Growth

The Pines Preservation Guild brought on three new passionate board members, and we continued our mission of historic preservation advocacy in Moore County. We petitioned local governments to support preservation policy and efforts by bringing to light topics such as 470 NW Broad in Southern Pines, the future of the West Southern Pines School, and highlighting traditionally underrepresented and misunderstood heritage structures through our social media, newsletters, and our Preservation Month coloring pages.

The Pines Preservation Guild also published a series of interviews with the candidates running for public office in Moore County, asking their views on historic preservation and sustainable development, and we began working with localities like Cameron on developing their local preservation tools to help protect their heritage structures. Despite our best efforts, we weren't able to save the last Lustron house in Carthage, but our joint work with two other state non-profits, NC Modernist and Preservation NC, enabled us to salvage parts of three Lustrons that had been stored locally for years – parts that can now be reused, rather than adding to unnecessary landfill waste.

In addition to these efforts, we were able to launch our Membership Program this year. The goal of this program is to make preservation accessible to heritage home owners in the county, while connecting them to other local heritage home owners as well as tradespeople who focus on historic structures.

But perhaps the biggest news of this year was that our small organization received its official tax-exempt status from the IRS. This designation allows us to not only raise funds, but also apply for grants that can help us further our mission of saving heritage buildings and communities in Moore County.

We have an exciting 2022 in the works, with a whole calendar of engaging in-person classes and fun events that will continue our mission of educating and advocating for the heritage buildings in our county. But we need your help. With the recent unprecedented development pressure in Moore County and its threat to our heritage structures and communities, your support will help ensure our continued achievement and growth, in turn helping save more of what makes this county so special. With just two days left in 2021, we're asking for your help in achieving our mission.

Donate today at the link above. No contribution is too small, and it will help make a real local impact.

We are so grateful for the incredible support we've had these past two years, and for the immense growth we’ve already experienced. We couldn't have done it without you, and we won't be able to continue without you.

After all, we’re just getting started.

Sincerely,

The Pines Preservation Guild
