On Friday May 29, George Smart, President of US Modernist, will present a richly illustrated talk exploring Modernist design in Moore County and North Carolina, including notable architects, and the cultural context that shaped residential and civic modernism in North Carolina.

On Saturday, May 30, enjoy a self‑guided tour of four significant mid‑century structures around Moore County, each highlighting distinctive features of Moore Modernism.

Friday, May 29 — Lecture Time: 6:30 PM reception • 7:00 PM lecture Venue: Moore County Cultural Center (venue address and parking details provided after registration)

Speaker: George Smart, President, US Modernist George Smart brings decades of experience documenting and promoting Modernist architecture.

His talk will cover:

  • The rise of Mid‑Century Modern in the Carolinas

  • Key regional architects and builders

  • Design elements: open plans, integration with landscape, materials and construction methods

  • Preservation challenges and opportunities for mid‑century buildings

Format:

  • 45–60 minute illustrated lecture

  • 20–30 minute Q&A

  • Light refreshments during reception

Saturday, May 30 — Self‑Guided Mid‑Century Tour Time: 9:00 AM–4:00 PM (self‑paced) Tour Launch: Pick up materials at The Pines Preservation Guild Welcome Table (location and hours provided to registrants)

Tour Details:

  • Four mid‑century structures in Moore County selected for architectural significance and representative design features of the period.

  • Self‑guided format with printed route maps, historical summaries, architect/build date information, and photographing guidelines.

  • Each stop includes exterior viewing and interpretive signage; interior access only where permission is posted and noted in tour materials.

  • Recommended driving route provided; allow a full day to visit all stops and explore surrounding landscapes.

  • The Carver Residence (c. 1958) — Example of open plan living, clerestory windows, and expansive glass walls integrating the house with its wooded lot.
