Winners of the 2025 Historic Preservation Merit Award :
Residential Winners:
The Friends of Weymouth
Project: rehabilitation of the circa 1916 Lamont Cottage in Southern Pines
Work conducted:
Remodel of downstairs back bathroom to accommodate ADA requirements.
Restored downstairs and upstairs screened-in porches. Both porches were re-roofed. New flooring and screening on upstairs porch. New steps and railing on downstairs porch. Both porches painted.
Upstairs bathroom tile was replaced on floor and wainscoting to reflect the appropriate era of home and to provide a contiguous look with the newly completed ADA bathroom and other two bathrooms that had been renovated previously. Plumbing fixtures replaced in upstairs bathroom.
Reconfigured kitchen cabinetry and installation of new countertops. Created a storage area in hallway leading to the ADA bedroom.
Removed old flooring in kitchen and hallway and replaced it with hardwood flooring without transitions to accommodate ADA needs.
Created a dedicated laundry room which closes with a repurposed door that is original to the house.
Railing and banisters built for the ADA ramp in front of the house.
Weatherstripping appropriate for the era of the house was fashioned and placed on doors in living room and upstairs bedroom door leading to porch.
Interior and exterior painting.
Exterior landscaping and hardscaping work was completed including a new parking pad for those with accessibility issues.
Commercial Winners:
Friends of the Aberdeen Library and the Town of Aberdeen
Project: rehabilitation of the circa 1912 Wholesale Grocery Building in Aberdeen
Work conducted:
The 17" thick brick walls were cleaned, re-pointed with new masonry
All original windows restored
30% of the original ceiling was saved and cleaned.
The interior was reconfigured to create new rooms
The loading dock is now a 'patio deck' with railing.
A walkway entry and a short walkway from the handicap parking area meet all ADA requirements.
