2025 Historic Preservation Merit Awards
Recognizing extraordinary examples of projects preserving the historic buildings in Moore County, NC
The Pines Preservation Guild is excited to announce its second annual Historic Preservation Merit Award!
Between now and Dec 19, we are accepting nominations for extraordinary examples of preservation of a historic building in two categories: Commercial and Residential.
Projects nominated can be located anywhere within Moore County and the project must have been completed between Dec 14, 2024, and Dec 19, 2025.

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, December 19, 2025 at 5pm
Awards will be presented to the winners at The Pines Preservation Guild’s Party for Preservation in February 2026
FAQs
What are the judging criteria?
Nominations will be judged by how well they adhere to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation
What constitutes a Commercial Structure?
Properties eligible for this award as a Commercial Structure are properties used for business purposes, such as generating income or providing a workspace.
Examples of Commercial Structures are:
Retail spaces
Hotels and resorts
Strip malls
Restaurants
Healthcare facilities
Industrial properties
Multi-family residential rental buildings with more than five units
What constitutes a Residential Structure?
Properties eligible for this award as a Residential Structure are properties used for living purposes.
Examples of Residential Structures are:
Single-family homes
Townhouses
Condominiums
Multi-family homes with four units or less
Does a building need to be on the National Register to be nominated?
No! Any building nominated needs only to be over 50 years old at the time of nomination (construction date before 1975).
Do I need to be the owner of a building to nominate it?
No, you do not need to be the owner!
Winners of the 2024 Historic Preservation Merit Award :
Residential Winners:
Jesse Coyle and Denise Krauza
Project: rehabilitation of the circa 1962 Norris L. and Sara Hodgkins Residence in Southern Pines, designed by Thomas Hayes
Work conducted:
Refinished entire home's hardwood floors
Preserved vintage tile where possible
Removed post-construction additions
Renovated main and in-law quarter kitchens
Rebuilt deck and repainted house
Acquired period-specific MCM furniture and vintage art
Rehabilitated 3½ bathrooms with modernist design
Commercial Winners:
Brian Mitchell and Chelsea Fields
Project: rehabilitation of the circa 1950 Cameron Farm Supply Building in Cameron
Work conducted:
Removed drop ceiling and restored historic tin tile ceiling
Cleaned and repaired original cinder block walls
Created coffee bar from reclaimed lumber paying tribute to building's railroad and agricultural history
Completed extensive mold remediation
Updated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
